Taiwan’s Optoelectronics Industry Down 6% YoY in 2011
In 2011 alone, the revenue of Taiwan’s optoelectronics industry contracted 6% year on year to approximately US$73.3 billion, due chiefly to global economic meltdown, according to the non-profit Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA).
The slump rate was higher than the 5% decline pace registered by the industry worldwide. Compared with US$403.8 billion the global industry generated throughout 2011, Taiwan’s 2011 result accounted for18% of the global total.
By industrial segment, TFT-LCD panel and module manufacturing topped other sectors of the Taiwan industry last year with revenue of NT$1.03 trillion (US$34.6 billion at US$1: NT$30). The other nine iconic sectors were TFT-LCD materials and components, digital camera, solar cell, optical-disc player, LED packaging, precision optical components and lens, LED epi-wafer, optical disc, and silicon crystalline. The 10 sectors were responsible for a combined 93% of 2011 revenue of Taiwan’s optoelectronics industry.
According to PIDA’s surveys, Taiwan’s flat-panel industry, composed of electronic paper, organic LED (OLED), TN/STN display panel, TFT-LCD manufacturing equipment, TFT-LCD materials, and TFT-LCD panel, produced revenue of NT$1.43 billion (US$47.6 billion) last year alone, dwindling 7% year on year.
Of Taiwan’s flat-panel industry large-size panel manufacturing fell 15% year on year, to NT$796.9 billion (US$26.5 billion) last year, whereas small-size panel manufacturing marked an annual growth rate of 18% last year with revenue of NT$241.8 billion (US$8 billion). The opposite revenue development reflected the shift of Taiwan’s flat-panel industry towards small-size panels from large-size panels in terms of product emphasis.
PIDA forecast that in 2014 Taiwan’s large-size panel industry will generate revenue of NT$884.9 billion (US$29.4 billion), which represents single-digit increase rate each year from 2011. In the meantime, the island’s small-size panel industry will see revenue increase at double-digit rate, to NT$337 billion (US$11.2 billion) until 2014.
PIDA pointed out that Taiwan’s optoelectronics industry is experiencing a short-term reshuffling in terms of product priority. Over the next five years, LED lighting, solar energy, opto communications, and biomedical technologies will dominate Taiwan’s optoelectronics industry.
